“God is Change—
Seed to tree,
tree to forest;
Rain to river,
river to sea;
Grubs to bees,
bees to swarm.
From one, many;
from many, one;
Forever uniting, growing, dissolving— forever Changing.
The universe
is Godʼs self-portrait.”
- Octavia E. Butler, in book Parable of the Sower
I’ve been growing plantitas & reflecting on Octavia E. Butler's Earthseed. Plantitas teach me that we can shape change, shape God. As I grow veggies from a sprouting potato, I feel God in the palm of my hand. The colorful leaves on trees invite me to reflect on ways that we are always changing. A growing plant teaches me that we must shed parts to grow more fully. A blooming flor shows me that change can be beautiful. A dying tree reminds me to grieve the more painful changes. The practice of seedkeeping encourages me to prepare & have hope for the future.
Grateful for my sweet potato plantita friend.
